Abstract

882,227. Toothed and friction gearing. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Feb. 24, 1958 [Feb. 22, 1957], No. 5965/57. Class 80 (1). [Also in Group XXXVIII] Toothed or friction gearing for driving either of two driven gears 2, 3 from a driving gear 1 in accordance with the direction of rotation of the driving gear comprises coupling gears 4, 5 carried on supports 6, 7 respectively which are guided by pins 12 in slots 8, 9 and 10, 11. The gears 4, 5 are biased by light springs (not shown) into engagement with gears 1, 2 and 1, 3 and are in engagement with idlers 13, 14 when not driving. When driving gear 1 rotates clock. wise the coupling gear 4 is urged into engagement with and drives gear 2 clockwise whilst coupling gear 5 is released. On anti-clockwise rotation of gear 1 gear 5 drives gear 3 anticlockwise and gear 4 is released. In a modified arrangement the coupling gears 4, 5 are carried on a common member which moves one way or the other to effect a drive to gear 2 or gear 3. A brake for the gear member which is not driven may also be applied automatically.
