816,028. Chain gearing. DAIMLER-BENZ A.G. June 19, 1957 [June 23, 1956], No. 19321/57. Class 80 (1). To reduce noise in a roller chain drive the sprocket is provided with a resilient annulus 15 supporting the flat chain links 16 in such a way that the axes of the chain rollers lie outside the pitch circle of the sprocket teeth, whereby only one roller at a time is engaged by the driving flank of a tooth. Means are also adopted to prevent any of the other rollers contacting the back, or non-driving flank, of a tooth, such means comprising widening the tooth gaps, reducing the roller diameters, or making the chain pitch greater than the sprocket tooth pitch. The tooth gaps may also be deepened.
