An adjustable shaft-sinking rig for lifting cages or skips by lifting and guide cables 15, and 16, 17, Fig. 1, respectively, which run over sheaves 8, 9 comprises at least one mast which can be tilted in a vertical plane and slidably displaced in a plane perpendicular thereto for adjusting the fall of the cables in the shaft, the mast being braced by telescopic struts 3, 6. As described, two masts 1, 2, Fig. 2, are pivoted at 4 to cross-slides 14 and interconnected by telescopic members 11, 12 so that the masts can be moved sideways and swung apart. The members 11, 12 may be replaced by additional struts 6. The sheaves 9 can be moved up and down the mast in guideways 20, 21, a ladder 13, being provided on the rack of each mast to facilitate this. Guy wires 22 may be provided. The winding gear, not shown, must be so positioned that the resultant force exerted by the cables passes along the axis of the mast.
