Abstract

876,312. Stuffing-box substitutes. DOWTY MINING EQUIPMENT Ltd. June 3, 1959 [May 8, 1958], No. 14795/58. Class 122 (5). Foreign matter is excluded from the interior of an hydraulic pit-prop by a packing device comprising a wiper ring 17 of resilient material supported by the cylinder 11 and resiliently contacting the ram 20 and a segmented scraper ring 21 pressed against the wiper ring and against the ram 20 by a retaining ring 23 secured, as by welding at 24, to the cylinder. The wiper ring 17 is of U-section and the scraper ring 21 preferably is formed by three separate steel sheet segments of equal arcuate extent. Alternatively, the scraper ring may be only partially divided into segments by radial slots at its scraping edge.
