A scraping device for relatively-movable parts, e.g. the piston rod 5 and the cylinder 1 of an hydraulic pit-prop, comprises a stripping sleeve 6 of rubber-like material arranged above a guide sleeve 4, and a split stripping ring 9 which embraces the piston rod 5, is arranged above the sleeve 6 so as to form an annular chamber 10 around the piston rod and is capable of radial and axial movement to yield (as shown in Fig. 2) to transverse movements of the rod 5 and excess pressure in the chamber 10 caused by the accumulation of dirt therein. The split ring 9 has a tapered bore arid is welded at one end to a split support ring 8 which is bent inwards for about a quarter of its periphery adjacent the welded portions, the remainder being sprung into a retaining groove formed in the cylinder immediately above the guide sleeve 6 and adjacent to the sealing lip 7 of the stripping sleeve 6. An annular gap 11 around the stripping ring 9 is provided so that a screwdriver or similar tool may be used to lift the free end of the stripping ring 9 to remove dirt from the space below the ring, which may, alternatively, be made of plastic material, in which case it is secured to the supporting ring 8 by a screwed or riveted connection instead of being welded thereto.
