Abstract

875,201. Washing-machines. ROLLS RAZOR Ltd. Dec. 2, 1957 [Oct. 9, 1956], No. 30809/56. Class 138 (2). A washing-appliance comprises a casing 11, a container 12 within it for washing fluid and the articles to be washed having walls 15 of. a resilient substance, and a vibrator unit within the casing 11 but outside the container 12, adapted to agitate the fluid therein through an oscillating membrane or disphragm 14 in the base 13. The vibrator may comprise an electromagnet 31 below the base 13, the container 12 being of rubber, plastic or a combination of rubber, plastic and metal and the diaphragm 14 a metal disc. The vibrator may be secured to the container 12 on a resilient frame 25, an electromagnet 31 and armature 37 being attached to the legs 28 and 29 thereof, the bridge 27, extending as shown, being secured in contact with the base 13 by a bolt 26. A circuit breaker contact 41, closed when the appliance is inoperative, disposed in the circuit of the vibrator unit, opens and closes periodically with the vibrations of the container 12. To alter the frequency of the vibrator the'circuit breaker 41 (carrying an insulated pin 43) is connected to it by means of adjustable nuts 35 on a threaded bolt 36, secured to the armature 37 and leg 29, and a lever 42 having an adjusting screw 44 coupling the leg 29 and the circuit breaker 41 which is in series with the coil of the electromagnet 31 and a main switch 47. The magnet 31 may be directly and rigidly connected to the base 13, the armature 37,being connected by a resilient frame thereto, or the magnet may be connected to the casing 11 and the armature 37 to the container 12 rigidly or-resiliently. The contact 41 may be replaced by an electronic valve or a half-wave rectifier and the vibrator unit may be bolted to the container 12 through the diaphragm 14. The casing 11 can have various apertures, one each for a clock and a drainage point, two for handles, and one for entry of electric cable and at the top may support the flanged rim 16 of the container 12, seating the cover 20 having a plug 21 for insertion of a heater. In a final modification the vibrator unit comprises an electric motor below the base 13 with means for imparting a twisting or turning movement thereto and to the walls 15 in the form of a cam or flywheel, eccentrically mounted on the motor shaft. The base 13 is reinforced by a metal disc and the unit is suspended from underneath the base by an auxiliary plate bolted to the disc.
