A washing-machine comprises a tub 17 having an inwardly-directed flange 16 defining an opening, a casing 11 around the tub, a wringer 15 supported above the opening and a cover 14 having side walls adapted to rest on the tub flange and covering and concealing the wringer and opening while the wringer is in its operative position. As shown in Fig. 4, the cover may be inverted and suspended on the casing to receive articles of clothing passed through and discharged from the wringer, horizontally spaced hooks 78b projecting from a wall of the casing below the outside edge of the tub flange engaging portions of one of the side walls of the cover, e.g. in slots 14b, another portion of the cover resting on resilient bumpers 81 secured below the hooks. The agitator mechanism comprises blades 24 (Fig. 1) mounted on a shaft 22 rotating in a centre post 18 secured to the base of the tub 17 by bolts 19 screwed into internally-threaded spacer rods 21. The rotary motion of motor 30 is transmitted by belt and pulley to a transmission system 36 which transforms it to an oscillatory motion of the shaft 22. The heater, in the form of a thin flat coil 41 of electrical resistance wire (Fig. 6), is mounted close to the base of the tub between an upwardlydirected conical recess in the base and a similarly shaped plate 38, the plate and base being clamped together between bolts 19 and spacer rods 21 with resilient rings 39 and 40 preventing access of moisture to the coil. The coil is disposed between insulating rings, e.g. of mica, and rests on an asbestos ring 45.
