Abstract

872,873. Packaging ; making paper and like bags. HONNE, K. Oct. 14, 1957 [Oct. 15, 1956], No. 32014/57. Classes 94(1) and 94(2). Apparatus for making and filling a bag and sealing the mouth, comprises means to open the end of a flattened tubular web of the bag material for gripping by feed means which draw it towards a filling nozzle, the bag base being formed by heat sealing and cutting from the web and the bag mouth being heat sealed after filling. In one embodiment, the web 1 passes between guide rollers 2 which support an opening device 18 lying freely within the mouth of the tube. The device consists of plates of magnetic material 18 hinged at 19 at their lower ends and capable of being engaged through the tube by magnets 28<SP>1</SP>, the latter hinging apart the plates and opening the tube for gripping by the feed means 5. The feed means comprises pairs of arms 7<SP>1</SP>, 8<SP>1</SP> having tube engaging lips 7, 8. As the means 5 approaches the tube cam elements (not shown) cause the lips 7, 8 to separate and grip the tube edge, the means 5 then rising to draw the tube up to a filling nozzle 6. Combined cutting and sealing devices 30, 33 form the bag bottom and cut the web, the members 18, 28<SP>1</SP>, now in their inner position, preventing it from receding. After filling, a portion 6<SP>1</SP> of the nozzle is raised by a solenoid 25 to permit sealing jaws 30 to close the mouth, spring loaded elements 35 engaging the bag prior to the jaws to pull the mouth portions a small distance downwards to ensure that the seal is adjacent the upper edge of the bag. In other embodiments, the rollers 2 may be replaced by a table having a slot for the web. The bag may be opened by suction grippers or by arms having adhesive gripping surfaces.
