721,580. Filling bags. INDUSTRIEWERKE KARLSRUHE AKT.-GES. Dec. 16, 1952 [Dec. 24, 1951; Jan. 31, 1952], No. 31813/52. Class 94 (1). A method of air-tight packing of powdered, granular or paste-like material in bags in which successive pockets are formed in a V-shaped band by glueing, heat sealing &c. separating the pockets to form separate bags which are opened, filled and closed at their filling ends is characterized in that the filling and closing process takes place on an intermittently operated turn-table which has pairs of tongs at its circumference which grip the bags. The bags are opened by moving the tongs of each pair towards one another with the simultaneous insertion of a shaping piece, and the tongs guide the opened bags to filling and closing devices and to a delivery member. The band 2 is fed from a roll 1, folded into a V-shape 3 and passed between rollers 4, and when stationary is sealed by jaws 5, 6 to form a series of pockets. An intermittently operated pair of rollers 7 feed the band to cutters 8, and the separated bags 9 are fed by reciprocating tongs 10 to pairs of tongs 12 on a turntable 11. The tongs 12 of each pair move together and a shaping piece 13 is inserted into the bag mouth. The bags are filled at 14, the tongs 12 recede to close the bag mouth which is sealed at 16, and the bags are then fed to a conveyer 18. To ensure that the shaping piece may readily enter the bag a thin strip is arranged near the tongs 10, and is pushed into the open side of each bag, during its delivery to the tongs 12.
