Abstract
870,758. Universal joints. LEON, E. D. Sept. 8, 1958 [April 2, 1958], No. 28701/58. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXII] In a constant velocity-ratio universal joint of the kind having balls 26 in grooves 21 ... 24 in inner and outer members 11, 10 each member has an even number of straight grooves and adjacent grooves 21, 22 and 23, 24 are oppositely inclined at the same angle to the longitudinal axis of the respective member so that diametrically-opposed grooves are parallel and adjacent grooves in the inner and outer members 11, 10 intersect at the same angle when the longitudinal axes of the two members coincide. As shown, the balls 26 are retained in a partspherical cage 12 between the spherical surfaces 20, 19 of the inner and outer members 11, 10 and the axis of each groove lies in a plane through the axis of the member. In Figs. 11 ... 13 (not shown) adjacent grooves in each member are oppositely inclined at an equal angle to the plane through the axis, and the balls are retained by the grooves alone. Since opposite grooves in each member are parallel they can be formed simultaneously by a single broaching operation.
