Abstract

863,378. Universal joints. BELLOMO, A. March 29, 1957 [May 3, 1956], No. 10417/57. Class 80 (2). In a constant velocity-ratio universal joint of the kind wherein drive-transmitting balls 3 lie in a bisector plane at the intersection of grooves 12, 15 in complementary spherical coupled members 1, 2, the axes of the grooves are rectilinear, and the four axes of the grooves 11, 12, 14, 15 of an adjacent pair of balls lie in a plane 7 (or 10) parallel to or slightly divergent from the joint axis. The axes of the grooves of the male and female spherical members 1, 2 intersect the joint axis symmetrically on opposite sides, so that by turning the members relatively through 180 degrees about a diameter, the axes of the grooves become coincident and the grooves may be machined simultaneously in both members. The groove pairs in each member converge, as shown, or are parallel. Cutouts 42 permit assembly. The members 1, 2 may be self-centring on their spherical surfaces, or clearance may be provided to permit centring by the balls, and relative axial movement. A six-ball joint also is shown.
