Abstract

810,289. Universal joints. UNIPOWER RZEPPA Ltd., and CULL, W. March 27,1956 [April 7, 1955], No. 10222/55. Class 80 (2). In a constant-velocity joint comprising balls 14 engaged in meridian race grooves 10, 15 in spherical outer and inner members 1, 2, the balls being located in apertures in a spherical cage 13 positioned between the members 1, 2, the race grooves are of such cross-section, e.g. semi-elliptical, arcuate or flat, that the balls contact therewith at a predetermined pressure angle, e.g. 45 degrees, inward of the groove margins and away from the roots of the grooves, and the meridian arcs of the grooves are struck from centres symmetrically displaced from the joint centre 9 such that the mating pitch paths cross and the groove flank contact lines of the inner and outer tracks converge, when the joint is aligned, at an angle greater than twice the angle of friction, e.g. at an angle of 11 degrees 28', assuming the angle of friction to be 5 degrees. Diagrams (not shown) illustrate the shape and angular disposition of the grooves.
