Abstract

863,984. Regulating. TELEVISION ASSOCIATES Inc. Sept. 3, 1957 [Sept. 10, 1956], No. 27721/57. Class 7(6). [Also in Group XXXI] A throttle valve 22, Fig. 1, actuated by an accelerator pedal 24 may be held in any preselected position by an electromagnet 36 which on energization holds stationary a sliding member 40 connected by a linkage 42 to the throttle valve lever 46, a resilient connection 50 in the linkage 42 permitting further opening of the throttle valve by the accelerator pedal when the locking device 36 is operative. The electromagnet 36 is energized by momentary closing of a button switch 117, Fig. 7, which energizes a relay 110 to close the electromagnet circuit 104, simultaneously completing a holding circuit 120, 122, 124, 114, for the relay 110 so that this relay remains energized when switch 117 is broken. Depression of the brake pedal 90, Fig. 1, causes energization of a relay 126 to break the holding circuit 120 and de-energize the electromagnet 36 to release the throttle valve and permit it to close. The electromagnet 36 may also be rendered inoperative by a manually operated switch 130 or by a relay 128 operated when the horn is operated. Green and red lights 109, 134, are lit when the locking electromagnet 36 is inoperative and operative respectively. To permit partial closing of the throttle valve when the locking mechanism 36 is in operation, the connection between the member 40 and link 42 may include a lever 70, Fig. 6, having an arm 72 connected to an armature 79 cooperating with two solenoids 80, 82. During normal operation the solenoid 82 is energized to hold armature 79 to the right as shown in Fig. 6, but depression of a switch 164, Fig. 7, breaks the circuit of solenoid 82 and completes that of solenoid 80, whereby armature 79 is pulled to the left to rotate lever 70 and move linkage 42 to close the throttle valve 22 regardless of the action of the locking mechanism 36. Release of the switch 164 restores armature 79 to its normal position and the throttle valve returns to its preselected open position.
