Abstract

863,985. Regulating. TELEVISION ASSOCIATES Inc. Dec. 13, 1957 [Dec. 31, 1956], No. 38856/57.;'Cla'ss 7(6). [Also in Group XXXI] A motor vehicle throttle valve 20 may be held in any desired position by an electromagnetic device 10 which, when energized, holds a bar 34, connected to the throttle valve lever 17 by a spring-loaded one-way connection 70, stationary. An adjusting means 84 permits variation of the throttle valve position during operation of the device 10 without disturbing the preselected position of the bar 34. The bar 34, which normally slides freely over the core of the electromagnet 10, carries pivoted on its end a lever 82, Fig. 2, having one end connected by a cable 86 to a manually operating device 88 and the other end connected through a link 62 and lost-motion spring 70 to the throttle lever 17 which is operated by the normal accelerator pedal. The device 88 comprises an operating lever 102, Fig. 7 moving over a graduated scale 104 indicating throttle opening and throttle closing directions. Energization of the electromagnet 10 clamps the bar 34 stationary at the existing throttle opening position, so that the accelerator pedal can be released, but temporary increase or decrease in the throttle opening position can be obtained by operation of the lever 102, Fig. 7, which rotates lever 82 and moves link 62 relative to the bar 34, the lever 102 being returned to its normal mid-way position after completion of the temporary acceleration or deceleration. The lost-motion spring 70 also permits opening of the throttle valve beyond the preselected position by further depression of the accelerator pedal. The coil 40, Fig. 8, of the electromagnet 10 is initially energized by momentary closing of a switch 144, whereupon a relay 110 is actuated to close a holding circuit 161 of the coil. The device 10 is rendered inoperative manually by momentary closing of a switch 162 or automatically on operation of the vehicle brakes which opens a switch 166. Specification 863,984 is referred to.
