Abstract

863,734. Reciprocating pumps. SOC. INDUSTRIELLE DE BREVETS ET D' ETUDES S.I.B.E. June 30, 1959 [July 1, 1958], No. 22464/59. Class 102(1). A reciprocating pump, in particular a fuel pump, combined with a reserve liquid chamber comprises a diaphragm 5 having inlet and outlet valves 2, 3 and a reserve chamber 11 located, upstream of the inlet valve. A first passage 20a 20 leads from the bottom of the reserve chamber to the suction valve while a second passage 25, 24, 20b, 20 leads from the top of the chamber to the suction valve. A single valve member 21 controls the passages 20a, 20b, and is connected to a diaphragm 22 acted upon by a spring 23 and the pressure in a chamber 26 which communicates with the downstream side of the outlet valve by a passage 27. At the commencement of operation the spring 23 causes the valve 21 to close the passage 20b and liquid is drawn from the bottom of the reserve chamber. When the delivery pressure exceeds a predetermined value the passage 20a is closed and the passage 20b opened whereby vapour in the reserve chamber is pumped until the liquid level rises to N or the delivery pressure falls. In a modification the second passageway is in direct communication with the suction valve and has an orifice to regulate the vapour flow. The first passageway is controlled by a valve as above.
