Abstract

611,312. Regulating. BEDALE, P. W., and HUGHES, J. O. P. Oct. 5, 1945, No. 26034. [Class 7 (vi)] A fuel supply and metering device comprises a casing divided into three parts 12, 13, 14, arranged compactly so that the valves and their operating means controlling the fuel flow according to the engine operating conditions are contained therein. The part 12 has two compartments 15, 16, containing respectively a vane pump 19 and a set of capsules 33 subject to boost pressure and atmospheric pressure through the pipes 31 and 34. Fuel delivered by the pump 19 flows to a chamber 23 through an orifice 22 controlled by a centrifugal governor 20 actuating a needle valve 21, and then flows to the delivery chamber 29 through two orifices, the first controlled by a needle 27 connected to the capsules 33 and the second by a needle 28 operated by a capsule 45 in a liquid filled chamber 46 connected to a thermometric bulb in the induction pipe. The dividing wall between chambers 23 and 29 comprises in part a flexible diaphragm 41 connected to the needle 21 and adjustably loaded by a spring 42 to increase the fuel flow at slow-running. A diaphragm controlled relief valve 38 byepasses fuel to the suction side of the pump 19, and cup-shaped washers 51a, 51b maintained in oil under pressure on the pump driving shaft 17 prevent leakage of fuel into the crank-case.
