Abstract
862,149. Knitting-machines. SCOTT & WILLIAMS Inc. June 16, 1959 [Jan. 23, 1958], No. 20572/59. Class 74 (2). A comb-tensioning device is employed in a circular machine using fine yarns under a light tension, and comprises three integral fingers 28, 28<SP>1</SP>, 28<SP>11</SP> pivotally mounted so as to be capable of moving the yarn 7 passing through guides 18 in the ends of the fingers into greater or lesser contact with knobs 20 extending between the fingers. The restraint imposed on the yarn is caused by the magnetic force between two opposed, like poles of two magnets 62, 70 repelling themselves apart, the one magnet 70 being secured to an adjustable bracket 64 and the other magnet being attached to one finger 28 so that the fingers are urged upwardly against the action of gravity and the pull on the yarn to cause the yarn to bear against the knobs 20. Prior to the yarn guide 6 of the machine being brought into operation a coupling 46, 54 connected to control bar 16 maintains the fingers in a high position and initially when the yarn guide is brought into operation the fingers are retained in that position by magnetic attraction between a fixed magnet 34 and a soft iron bar 30 on one of the fingers 28<SP>1</SP>. This ensures that the yarn tension is initially high and the yarn sufficiently taut that the yarn between the guide 6 and the yarn clamp 8 does not balloon up and bridge the needles without being taken, but is correctly taken by the needles whereupon the tension exerted is sufficient to overcome the effect of magnet 34 causing the fingers to drop to their normal working position where they come under the influence of magnets 62, 70.
