860,579. Stuffing-box substitutes. BENDIX CORPORATION. July 15, 1959 [Oct. 29, 1958], No. 24346/59. Class 122 (5). A seal E capable of accommodating reciprocatory, lateral and angular movements of a rod D passing through a wall B, for example the piston-rod of a fluid-pressure motor where it passes through the casing of the motor, comprises a diaphragm 28, 30 which is clamped at its outer portion to the wall, formed with a central opening 32 surrounded by a flange 40 engaging the surface of the rod, and provided with an annular recess 48 for the reception of the flange 46 of a cup-shaped member 42 arranged to comprise the central portion 28 of the diaphragm. The diaphragm, which may be of rubber, is clamped to the wall by a retaining ring 34 arranged to act as an abutment for the central portion of the diaphragm. The member 42 is arranged with a close clearance with the rod and may be disposed on either side of the diaphragm. Specification 829,030 is referred to.
