Abstract

663,524. Stuffing-box substitutes. CRANE PACKING, Ltd. Feb. 26, 1948 [Nov. 9, 1944], No. 5773/48. Class 122(v) In a self-contained sealing unit for use between two relatively rotating parts 34, 36 comprising a container 16 having an inner wall 17 to surround one part 34 and a radial wall 19 extending therefrom, a sealing washer 10 with a radial surface 11 to contact a surface on one of the parts 34, 36 surrounds the wall 17, an extensible sleeve 20 is secured at one end to the washer 10 and at the other to the wall 17, a shell 13 concentric with the sleeve 20 is drivingly connected to tne means 27 which secure the sleeve 20 to the wall 17 and resilient means 32 are compressed between the wall 19 and the shell 13 to urge the washer away from the wall 19. In one embodiment the container 16 comprise inner and outer cylindrical walls 17, 18 connected by the wall 19 and is fitted in a recess 42 in the housing so that the washer 10 engages a ring 46 mounted on a compressible ring 45. The shell 13 has two pairs of openings at one end, one pair being slots and the other pair being apertures 30, into which lugs 28 spaced at 90 degrees on a clamping band 27 enter to be slightly rotatable therein and form a lost motion driving connection. The internal diameter of the shell 13 at the openings is equal to the external diameter of band 27, plus the radial weight of one lug 28, while the other end of the shell 13 drivingly engages the washer 10. The apertures 30 limit the forward movement of the shell 13 and washer 10. In a further embodiment, the sealing unit, modified by having stops for the shell on the outer wall, is mounted on the shaft to seal against an element on the housing and in another is provided with coil springs circumferentially spaced. Specification 593,413 is referred to.
