Abstract
858,447. Stuffing-box substitutes. SVENSKA ROTOR MASKINER A.B. Jan. 23, 1959 [Jan. 24, 1958], No. 2559/59. Class 122 (5). A seal between a rotary shaft 1 and a stationary casing 3 comprises a sealing element that co-operates with a radially-directed surface 9 on the shaft and is in sealing and threaded engagement with the casing. A holding sleeve 5 carries a sealing-ring 6 and has a threaded part 7 screwed into the casing 3 and packed by an 0-ring 12. A spring 10 having one end held in an axial bore 13 in the casing and the other held in a radial groove 14 in the sleeve 5 tends to rotate the sleeve in the direction to screw it out of the casing and thereby cause the ring 6 to press against the surface 9. Rotation of the sleeve 5, in the direction of rotation of the shaft, which may be caused by excess pressure between the ring 6 and surface 9, moves the ring 6 in a direction away from the surface 9. Annular grooves 8 are provided in the face of ring 6 abutting surface 9.
