Abstract

856,788. Charge pumps. DAIMLER-BENZ A.G. Jan. 6, 1959 [Jan, 18, 1958], No. 545/59. Class 7(2). [Also in Group XXVI] An I.C. engine installation comprises a torque converter between the crank-shaft and the output shaft, a supercharger driven by the crank-shaft either directly of through gearing, and an exhaust gas turbine connected to the output shaft directly or through gearing. In the installation shown, the crank-shaft of an I.C. engine 10 is connected to the output shaft 21 through a torque converter 11 and a clutch or coupling. An exhaust gas turbine 18 is connected to the output shaft 21 through gearing 20 and, it may be, a friction clutch. A supercharger 13 is connected to the crankshaft through toothed or chain gearing 12 and, it may be, a clutch, and may -have a power consumption about equal to the power output of the turbine 18. The gearing 12 and 20 may be of about the same ratio, and both may include an idler gear wheel such as 22. A by-pass valve may be provided to put the turbine 18 out of action when starting the engine 10.
