Abstract

855,060. Knitting. TEXTILE MACHINE WORKS. May 13, 1957 [May 15, 1956; July 17, 1956 (3); July 18, 1956], No. 15141/57. Class 74 (2). Intersia fabric, for example, a leg of a sock, is knitted on a four feeder circular machine by reciprocatory knitting and has overplaid yarns incorporated in it as it is produced. In the case of a sock, diamond-shaped areas are knitted simultaneously by reciprocation at each side of the sock followed by the simultaneous reciprocatory knitting of diamond-shaped areas at the front and rear. The shaping of the areas is achieved by needle selection and the various areas are joined together by sutures. In knitting two opposed areas on the machine a body yarn 26 is fed to one group of needles 24 to 25 and knitted at a No. 1 feed, Fig. 5, followed by the feeding of an overplaid yarn d to selected needles 30 of the group and the knitting of it by these selected needles at a No. 2 feed the other needles remaining inoperative. Simultaneously, an opposed group of needles 27 to 28 knits a body yarn 29 at a No. 3 feed followed by the selected needles 33 knitting an overplaid yarn g at a No. 4 feed. On reverse movement of the needles they again take and knit the respective body yarns except that the selected needles 30 and 33 and further selected needles 32 and 31 remain at low level and the body yarn is allowed to float over their wales. Continuing their movement the further selected needles 32 and 31 take and knit further overplaid yarns h and c at the No. 4 and No. 2 feeds. During the next stroke of the machine all of the selected needles are held low and the remaining needles knit the body yarn so that further floats are produced across the wales of the selected needles. Prior to the needles approaching the No. 2 and No. 4 feeds a further selection is made of the needles and the sequence of operations is repeated. These operations result in a fabric as illustrated in Fig. 3 being produced. Alternatively all of the needles of a group may knit the body yarns in each course followed by the selected needles taking and knitting the overplaid yarns. After completing one pair of opposed diamondshaped areas the feeds are reversed so that No. 2 and No. 4 feeds supply the body yarns and No. 1 and No. 3 feeds supply the overplaid yarns for completion of the other pair of opposed areas. Where the first and last portions of each diamond-shaped area do not include an overplaid yarn the first portions of one pair of opposed areas may be knitted simultaneously with the last portions of the other pair of opposed areas so that four areas of fabric are produced simultaneously by reciprocatorily knitting a body yarn at each of the four feeds. The overplaid yarns knitted in one diamond-shaped area are floated vertically over the intervening areas until they are again incorporated in the diamond-shaped area immediately below the one above.
