Abstract

849,337. Silencing gaseous currents; air cleaners. GENERAL MOTORS Ltd. Dec. 23, 1958 [Jan. 8, 1958], No. 754/58. Class 7(2). An air intake silencer comprises a pair of oppositely dished shells 1, 2, the lower shell 2 having an inlet 11 in its base and an outlet 7 each eccentric to the shell axis, and an intake pipe 12 inclined at an angle to said axis. Pipes 8, 12 are welded to the flanges 7, 11 and pipe 12 may widen from the flared end 16. An annular air filter 9, e.g. of crimped wire or bonded fibres, may be seated in the depression 5 formed around the outlet 6. To facilitate cleaning, the opening 14 is closed by a removable plug 15. The shells 1, 2 may be permanently secured together or detachably secured by a central nut and bolt.
