845,707. Percussive tools. SUTCLIFFE Ltd., R., and BAINES, L. Nov. 21, 1957 [Nov. 30 1956 ; April 16 1957], Nos. 36766/56 and 12474/57. Class 124. [Also in Group XXIX] Hydraulic apparatus comprises pump plungers 3, 4 reciprocated by an eccentric 2 and supplying liquid to either end of a cylinder 10 to reciprocate a piston 11. Each pump plunger delivers a greater volume of liquid than the cylinder can accept. As shown in Fig. 1 the excess liquid is supplied to accumulators 13, 14 which are so loaded that on y the excess liquid passes into them. Make-up liquid is supplied through valves 17, 18. In a modification, Fig. 4, relief valves 55, 57 are provided for discharging excess liquid to the plunger which is on its suction stroke, and make-up liquid is supplied through valves 59, 60. A relief valve 62 limits the maximum pressure obtainable. The piston 11 is freely mounted on a rotatable rod 12 fast with a percussive tool such as a pick. The rod 12 is formed with an anvil portion 35 which is struck by the piston 11 at the end of its forward stroke. Return movement of the piston may be cushioned by a spring 54, Fig. 4, or by an air recuperator, Fig. 2, comprising a piston 39 fast with the piston 11 and movable in a housing 40. A stop 41 limits the reverse movement. Other modifications are referred to in which the excess liquid pumped by the plungers passes through ports which are uncovered by the piston 11 at the ends of its stroke or in which valves are mechanically opened and closed as required.
