Abstract
1,015,380. Percussive drills. K. E. A. JOELSON. Aug. 12, 1964 [Aug. 21, 1963], No. 32901/64. Heading B4C. A percussive drill comprises a working piston 8 movable in a cylinder 6 and an elastic damping means 28 to absorb the kinetic energy of the piston at the end of its working stroke if the piston is not stopped by contact with the object to be struck. The damping means is in the form of a light casing member 25 slidable on enlarged portions 26, 26 of the piston 8 so as to define a chamber 28, the member being retained on the piston by means of a split ring 30. In operation, the working piston is moved downwardly by means of a column of liquid trapped between a drive piston 4 and the working piston, the drive piston being moved downwardly by means of an eccentric 2 rotated via an hydraulic motor 2a; the motor is driven, via liquid fed from a tank 11, by a pump 14, the pump also feeding liquid via pipes 21, 22, the interior of a housing 1 and a check valve 5, into the space between the pistons. Liquid is also fed via a port 29 in the piston 8 into the chamber 28 so that if the piston for some reason does not strike the end of the tool 24 and overruns, the member 25 strikes a shoulder 31 on the housing 1 and such impact is cushioned as the liquid in the chamber 28 is forced through port 29 into a channel 19 via a port 9; the area of the port 29 may be adjustable. The drive piston is returned by means of a spring 7 and the piston 8 by means of suction drawn through a pipe 16, connected, via a valve 17, with the low-pressure side of an ejector 18 in the liquid feed pipe 21, 22.
