Whilst a weft inserter, Fig. 15, having three weft laying heads c, d, e crosses the loom, the shed is changed between successive heads. The middle head d lays a continuous weft and the heads c, e lay "hairpins" of weft having their cut ends at opposite edges of the fabric; each leg of a hairpin is separated from the other leg by a pick of continuous weft, a leg of an oppositely-directed hairpin, and another pick of continuous weft. All picks of the continuous weft lie in the same shed formation of a plain weave, and all legs of all hairpin wefts lie in the opposite shed formation. Weft inserter. The weft laying head d is carried directly by a bar m sliding on guides m<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 2, and the heads c, e are supported from the ends of the bar. The weft threads are led to the heads through tubes f, g, h, Fig. 15. The weft inserter is attached to an endless chain which is given a reciprocatory motion derived from a crank. Shedding mechanism. The warp threads pass through eyes in comb-like elements 13, 14 pivoted at 18, 24 and coupled toegther by a link 25; separate shedding elements are provided for narrow sections of the warp, individual cams acting through links 21 being angularly spaced to produce a wave-like sequence as the weft inserter traverses the warp. The shedding elements normally occupy the position shown, in which either of the weft laying heads c, e can operate in the space between the element 13 and the fell; as the head d approaches, the elements 13, 14 are moved apart, thereby changing the shed and leaving a clear space between the guides m<SP>1</SP> and the fell for passage of the head d; when the head has passed, the parts return to the position shown.
