Abstract
844,538. Valves. THERMO-TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT Ltd. June 23, 1958 [July 1, 1957], No. 20706/57. Class 135. A hinged valve 2 has a diaphragm 7 providing a continuous seal between the valve and valve seat 4 and bridging elements 16, 17 securing, independently of local level differences between the valve and its seat e.g. due to temperature changes, a seating for the diaphragm which is free from any sudden changes of level. The valve is rotated directly or through a toothed quadrant by an electric motor and has an octagon shape, each side having four brackets 2b loosely carrying bolts 15, which may be spring loaded, and securing the bridging piece 16 of the same length as the side, the valve closing on one step of the seat and the bridging piece closing on a second step. The bridging piece carries a thin metal diaphragm 17 of the same length as a side of the octagon, the diaphragms overlapping at the corners of the octagon and sealing on top of the valve and the seat. When the valve is closed another electric motor unrolls a roller blind 7 of thinner sheet metal which seals over the valve and its seat irrespective of heat distortion of the valve and seat, the diaphragm 7 being pulled on to the seat by downstream suction applied at orifice 18. Both diaphragms 7, 17 may be carried by the bridging piece and may be annular or circular, the diaphragm 17 being pressed on to the valve and seat by leaf springs carried by the bridging piece. In another embodiment the bridging piece and diaphragms are formed as a laminated structure co-operating with a sloping recess formed on top of the seat and valve. In order to open the valve a by-pass valve and a downstream butterfly valve may be provided to equalize pressures on either side of the hinged valve.
