In a butterfly valve a sealing ring 1, secured to the periphery of the valve member 9 by flexible means, e.g. diaphragms 2, 3, 4, forming closed annular chambers 5, 6, is urged towards or away from the valve seat 15 by selectively introducing fluid pressure to the appropriate chamber.
