840,734. Brake shoes. DAMIRON, P. Sept. 10, 1956, No. 27630/56. Class 103 (1). In a brake shoe comprising a body 4 and a chamber 15 formed within the body adapted to receive and hold a fluid therein, one wall 17 of the chamber constitutes the friction bearing surface and consists of a thin, flexible heatconducting material and the chamber 15 is connected to a source of fluid under pressure. The brake shoes 4 and 5 of the internal shoedrum brake arrangement shown in Fig. 1 are formed of two fabricated metal sections 18 and 19 welded together to form a cavity 21. Stretched across the opening of the cavity 21 is a thin flexible heat-conducting strip 17 gripped and folded under edges of the sections 18 and 19. A plastic lining 22 ensures that the chamber 15 is fluid-tight. Cooling fluid such as water or glycol is circulated through the chamber 15 in each brake shoe through inlets 23, 24 from a pump (not shown) and from the chamber in each brake shoe through outlets 29, 30 leading to the cooling fluid reservoir and heat exchanger (not shown). Inlet check valves 25, 26 permit entry of cooling fluid only when the pressure in the inlet conduits 23 and 24 exceeds a predetermined value and outlet check valves 27, 28 permit flow of fluid from the chambers 15 only when the pressure therein exceeds a predetermined value. A modification is disclosed in Fig. 5 in which the wall forming the friction bearing surface of the shoe is flush with the ends of the brake shoe body at the end of the cavity. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 775,052.
