Abstract

833,681. Davits and boat releasing gear. McQUEEN, G., and BERRY, W. H. March 11, 1958 [Dec. 12, 1956], No. 37906/56. Class 115. A davit comprising a supporting frame 12 mounted on the deck 10 adjacent the ship's side 11, and an articulated jib assembly, has cable and pulley means 34 for height-adjustably suspending a boat 38 at the outer end of the jib, and cable and pulley means 39 actuable to extend and retract the jib. The jib assembly comprises a platform 15 adapted to serve as a lateral extension of the deck 10, connected at one end by hinges 17 to the frame 12, the other end having a pivot pin 22 supporting the jib 20. The cable 39 is attached to the jib at 41 and to the drum of a winch 27. Downward movement of the platform 15 is limited by a chain 43. The cable or " fall ropes " 34 is connected to a winch 26, the drum 28 of which is driven bv an electric motor 29 having a brake 32 operated by a lever 33 which can be actuated from the boat 38 by means of a rope 47 which passes from the lever to a drum 50 in the boat. The boat is suspended via the falls 34, pulley blocks 36 and shackles 57 which are held in engagement with members 52 (secured to the bottom of the boat) by pivoted members 54 held by springs 60. The members 54 are connected by ropes 64 to a mechanism having a hand-lever 61, movement of which causes quick release of the shackles 57 from the members 52.
