Abstract

Vinyl esters of aromatic dicarboxylic acids containing the carboxylic groups in the meta or para position are prepared by heating the acids with acetylene under pressure at about 180-300 DEG C. under anhydrous conditions in the presence of cadmium oxide, cadmium salts, zinc salts or mixtures thereof. An inert solvent may be used and benzonitrile or the anhydride of an organic acid having not more than three carbon atoms may be present. Both mono- and di-esters are formed and may be separated by alkaline extraction. Esters of isophthalic and terephthalic acid are prepared.
