Abstract

Pentaerythritol trichlorohydrin is prepared by reacting one mol. of pentaerythritol with at least 3 mols of hydrogen chloride at a temperature of 150 DEG to 200 DEG C., in the presence of at least 0.1 mol. of an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms or an ester thereof. The reaction may be carried out in an inert organic solvent such as benzene, toluene, xylene or hexane. The acids and ester used are acetic and formic acid and ethyl acetate. More than 1 mol. of carboxylic acid or ester may be used, in which case the mono-ester of pentaerythritol trichlorohydrin is formed, e.g. the monoacetate, which is then saponified with sodium hydroxide to form pentaerythritol trichlorhydrin. Five examples of preparations are given.
