Abstract

832,426. Magnetic recording and reproducing heads. BURROUGHS CORPORATION. Sept. 27, 1957 [Oct. 22, 1956; May 17, 1957], No. 30289/57. Class 40 (2). A magnetic head for simultaneous recording and reproducing has a core with a portion common to two separate flux paths each of which has a high reluctance gap, recording and reproducing coils wound on separate portions, each of the portions being associated with one path only, and means for eliminating any net flux linking the coils. In the first embodiment, Fig. 1, the core comprises a U-shaped part 10 carrying a coil 22 and an E-shaped part 14 carrying a coil 24 on the middle limb. The two parts 10, 14 are joined by an intermediate portion 16 to form signal gaps 18, 20 associated respectively with the signal coils 22, 24. The arrangement is in effect a magnetic bridge circuit, Fig. 2 (not shown), which may be roughly balanced by notching the core as indicated at 31, and finally balanced by an adjustable shunt in the form of a screw 26. The arrangement of the coils at right angles to each other reduces the effect of external fields. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 3, the core has three substantially parallel branch portions, the central branch being divided. Shorting coils 56, 58 associated with coils 50, 52, respectively, are provided which each link one particular portion each of the divided branch portions. Thus two flux paths are provided which do not link either of the shorting coils, but do link the signal coils 50, 52 and there is thus no interaction between changes of flux in the two flux paths. Fig. 4 shows a combination of the arrangements of Figs. 1 and 3.
