Abstract

832,313. Variable track wheels. FIRESTONE TIRE & RUBBER CO. March 25, 1958 (Nov. 14, 1957], No. 9525/58. Class 144 (2). In a variable track tractor wheel of the type wherein the rim 13 is axially adjustable relative to the wheel disc 11 by means of helical rails 14 on the underside of the rim slidably engaged by radial jackscrews 43 on the disc periphery, concentricity of the rim and disc is ensured by the provision of fixed rail - receiving brackets 30 diametrically opposite the jack-screws 43. As shown, two fixed brackets 30 are bolted to the disc periphery 90 degrees apart with their bifurcated radially outer ends disposed to embrace the rails 14 and provide an abutment for the radially inner base of the rails in a concentric location. Each bracket 30 has an axial projection 32 to locate over an axial flange of the disc periphery. Each jack-screw 43 has a shank 42 slidably housed in a radial socket 41 of a bracket 40 which is bolted and located on the disc periphery in like manner to the brackets 30, the jack-screw having a bifurcated railengaging head 45, and an associated adjusting nut 44 which bears on the bracket 40. Tightening of the screws 43, after adjustment of the axial relation of the rim and disc, pulls the rim against the brackets 30 into concentric relation with the disc.
