Abstract

831,903. Centrifugal pumps. SIEMEN & HINSCH. Aug. 26, 1957 [Sept. 24, 1956], No. 26789/57. Class 110 (1). In a self-priming centrifugal pump mounted in a liquid container above the liquid level, the pump casing has at least one bearing bush serving also as a throttle for reducing leakage and disposed so that the leakage passes directly back to the container. The vertical pump shown is suspended within a container 1 by means of a flange 2. The pump, which is of circumferential flow-type and may have a single stage instead of the three stages shown, is rendered self-priming by the provision of a suction chamber 3 in which liquid is trapped when the pump is stopped. The upper bearing 10 acts as a throttling restriction to reduce leakage along the shaft. Leakage is returned to the container 1 through a hole 11 and the acid being pumped therefore does not reach a stuffing box 12, which only has to prevent leakage of vapour.
