Abstract

853,996. Piston packings; stuffing-box substitutes. REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT. Feb. 28, 1958 [March 5, 1957], No. 6583/58. Classes 122 (1) and 122 (5). A packing for use between a cylinder and a piston or piston-rod comprises a resilient operative portion 1, Fig. 2, which is secured by vulcanization or other means on a metal support 2 and consists of a sleeve portion with annular bearing beads 11 and a radial extension 12 at one or both ends embracing one or both sides of the support, one or both extensions being provided with a lip 9 for relatively slidable engagement with the piston-rod when the packing is mounted in a cylinder stuffing-box and with the cylinder when the packing is mounted on the piston. As shown in Fig. 2 applied to a stuffing- box, the support 2 is provided with a shoulder 3 engaging in a recess 4, the rear radial extension 12 of the portion 1 is unlipped and the front extension has both the lip 9 and a static lip 8; these lips 8, 9 diverge from one another in their free state so that when assembled they are urged into contact with the piston-rod 10, and cylinder. When the packing is applied to a. piston 13, as shown in Fig. 4, the portion 1 is bonded to a support 15 located on a shoulder 17 formed on the piston and is provided in addition to the lips 8, 9 and beads 11 with an anchoring- bead 18 which locates in a groove 19 in the piston; a buffer rib may be located between the two lips 8, 9 to take up shock at the end of the piston stroke and grooves may be formed in the rib to prevent its adhesion with the end wall of the cylinder. Two oppositely-disposed packings of the kind shown in Fig. 4 may be mounted on a double-acting piston. The packing shown in Fig. 8 is suitable for a double-acting piston and comprises two side extensions embracing the support 29 which constitutes the piston body; buffer ribs 22 are also provided. In the further modification shown in Fig. 13 applied to a double-acting piston, the resilient portion is bonded to a ring 37 and pairs of packings so formed are arranged to face in opposite directions. Two such packings in which the resilient portions bonded to the inner periphery of the ring are mounted in a stuffing-box (Fig. 14, not shown).
