Abstract
817,654. Variable-speed gear. REICHENBACHER. H. Aug. 9, 1957, No. 25131/57. Class 80 (2). Variable-speed planetary gearing comprises a driving-shaft A carrying stepped planet pinions 11, 12, the planet pinions 12 meshing a gear fast on a driven shaft B and the planet pinions 11 meshing two reaction elements, the first reaction element consisting of an internally-toothed ring 21 driving through a gear C to a gear C<SP>1</SP> on the shaft of a variable capacity swash-plate oil pump C<SP>11</SP> and the second reaction element being a sun gear 1 driving through a gear D to a gear D<SP>1</SP> on the shaft of a variable capacity swashplate oil motor D<SP>11</SP>, a common housing containing the pump and motor C<SP>11</SP>, D<SP>11</SP> and being turned about an axis E-E to vary the pump and motor capacities and thereby adjust the gear ratio. In the form shown, the axis of the pump C<SP>11</SP> is offset in the plane of Fig. 1 by an angle y from the axis of the motor D<SP>11</SP>. In the position of Fig. 1, the axis of the motor C" is parallel to the axis of the gear, so that the pump cannot work and no oil is passed. Accordingly, the gear C<SP>1</SP> and the associated reaction ring 21 are free, so that the pump D<SP>11</SP> is stationary and the planetary gear transmits drive at a first fixed ratio between the shafts A, B. By turning the casing of the pump and motor about the axis E-E until the axis of the motor D<SP>11</SP> is parallel to the main axis of the gear, the motor is similarly prevented from receiving oil from the pump, while its output shaft, the gears D<SP>1</SP>, D and the reaction sun gear 1 can turn freely. The planetary gear therefore again transmits drive at a second fixed ratio between the shafts A, B. With the pump and motor casing turned at an angle about the axis E-E in between these two positions, drive is transmitted between the shafts A, B with a ratio depending on the angular setting of the casing. If the casing of the pump and motor is turned about the axis E-E beyond either of the two neutral positions, the functions of the pump and motor C<SP>11</SP>, D<SP>11</SP> are interchanged.
