Abstract

914,314. Hydromechanical variable-speed gear. REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT. June 2, 1959 [July 18, 1958], No. 18813/59. Class 80 (2). A driving-shaft 1, Fig. 1, carries a sun-gear 2 meshing planet pinions 10 mounted in a carrier 11 fast with a driven shaft 12, the driving shaft also being connected directly to the input member 3 of an adjustable capacity hydrostatic pump/motor 4 of which the output member 5 is fast both with a ring gear 6 meshing the planet pinions 10 and with the input member 7 of a second adjustable capacity hydrostatic pump/motor 8, the latter having its output member 9 secured to a stationary casing. The two hydrostatic pump/motor units 4, 8 have their fluid circuits connected through means not shown. By setting the hydrostatic pump/ motor 4 to give its maximum fluid displacement while the hydrostatic pump/motor 8 is adjusted to give no fluid displacement, the input and output members 3, 5 of the hydrostatic pump/ motor 4 are locked together and a direct drive between the shafts 1, 12 is obtained. By adjusting the hydrostatic pump/motor 8 to give maximum fluid displacement while adjusting the hydrostatic pump/motor 4 to give no fluid displacement, the input member 7 of the hydrostatic pump/motor 8 is held stationary, together with the ring-gear 6, and a reduced ratio is obtained between the driving and driven shafts 1, 12. Continuous variation of ratio is obtained by intermediate settings of the adjustable capacity hydrostatic pump/motors 4, 8, with extension of the ratios obtained beyond the direct and mechanical reduced ratio settings described. In a preferred embodiment, a driving-shaft 1, Fig. 2, is fast with a sun-gear 2 meshing planet pinions 10 in a carrier 11 fast on a driven shaft 12, a pump/motor unit 3 fast with the shaft 1 carrying pistons 15 coacting with an adjustable swash-plate 5 trunnioned in a sleeve 6<SP>1</SP> fast with a ring gear 6 meshing the planet pinions. A second pump/motor 9 is fast with a stationary casing 18 and carries pistons 14 coacting with an adjustable swash-plate 7 trunnioned in a sleeve 19 secured to a valve plate 13 in turn secured to the sleeve 6<SP>1</SP>. Ducts 17 in the plate 13 allow the passage of fluid between the pump/motors 3, 9. The two swash-plates 5, 7 are so interconnected that one is normal to the gear axis when the other is inclined to the normal, and vice versa, turning the swash-plates adjusting the gear ratio. The swash-plates 5, 7 may be turned by mechanical or hydraulic means.
