Abstract

812,528. Hydraulic dampers. WOODHEAD-MONROE Ltd. Aug. 12, 1957, No. 25394/57. Class 108(3) An hydraulic shock absorber of the piston and cylinder type has rebound stop means comprising an annular member which is a close sliding fit within the cylinder or a counterbore in the latter, resilient means adapted normally to maintain the annular member in a predetermined position and a disc-like member mounted on the piston rod in proximity to the piston, the arrangement being such that as the shock absorber approaches the fully extended position the disc-like member will abut the annular member and further movement of the disc-like member, and hence of the piston and piston rod, will be resisted by hydraulic fluid present behind the annular member and also by the resilient means. Oh rebound, seat 25 on disc-like member 24 abuts annular member 22 to form an oil-tight seal therewith Thus oil enclosed above annular member 22 can escape only by way of the bore in rod-guide 18 or the clearance between annular member 22 and pressure tube 10, considerable resistance being offered to further rebound movement of the piston. Annular ring 22 may be accommodated in a counterbore in the top of tube 10 in which case spring 23 would merely have to urge ring 22 away from rod guide 18 and not support it. -Compression valve 14 has no bleed hole but a hole 26 in tube 10 serves the same purpose except when it is closed by piston 11. The position of the hole may be varied to provide the required characteristics.
