Abstract

554,732. Hydraulic shock-absorbers. NEWTON, N. B. Jan. 15, 1942, No. 601. [Class 108 (iii)] A hydraulic shock absorber comprises a hydraulic cylinder a, an impeller b having fluid transfer passages c therethrough, an impeller shaft d on which the impeller slides, and collars e, f, which carry flanges e<SP>2</SP>, f <SP>2</SP> which mask the passages c in progressive degree as they approach the impeller. The collars e, f are located between spring rings e<SP>1</SP>, f <SP>1</SP> and limit the lost motion between the impeller and the shaft. The collars, with recesses g in the impeller, form dashpots which control the approach of the masking flanges c<SP>2</SP>, f<SP>2</SP> towards the passages c. Springs i return the impeller to a "normal" position. In operation :-A slow oscillating movement is intensely damped because a slow movement allows a dashpot to close and hence allows substantial masking of the passages c (there is never complete masking, a free space, adjustable as by a washer h, being left between the impeller and the underside of the flange). A quick oscillating movement is not intensely damped because the quick movement does not allow the dashpot time to close, and hence there is no substantial masking of the passages c. The dashpot action may be modified as by providing tapered formations or fluid passages in the collars e, f and recesses g. In modified constructions, (a) the flanges e<SP>2</SP>, f <SP>2</SP> are separate from but spring-urged against the collars e, f, (b) the flanges e<SP>2</SP>, f are perforated, the perforations being normally (i.e. to slow movements) closed by a spring-urged washer which rises when the piston rod moves quickly, (c) (Fig. 4) the impeller is in two relatively-movable parts, o, p, having passages o<SP>1</SP>, p' which are masked by the impellers themselves. A collar r forms the male dashpot element. Adjustable stops s limit the approach of the parts o, p toward each other. Spring-loaded bolts t draw the parts o, p together, (d) there may be communication, adjustably restricted, between the dashpot spaces on each side of the piston as by means of a screw-valve-controlled passage in the impeller or in the rod.
