Abstract
811,200. Elbows: return bends. UNION CARBIDE CORPORATION. June 11, 1957 [June 11, 1956], No. 18323/57. Class 99(1). [Also in Groups XIII and XXV] A carbon elbow assembly 10 for attachment to an impervious carbon body H having a fluid-conducting passage 12 therein comprises a carbon elbow 16 disposed over an end of the conduit and having an elbowed, fluid-conducting channel 18 above the conduit, a tapered, hollow adaptor 24 provided with an open lower end 26 screwed into the conduit and an apertured upper end received in the elbow for providing a fluid passage between the channel and the conduit, and fastening means for sealing the assembly against fluid leakage. As shown in Fig. 2, the malleable, cast-iron adaptor is conical in form and screw-threaded for the reception of a bolt 36 under the head of which is disposed a metal washer 44 having an inner, rubber sealing ring 46; a sealing ring 40 is positioned in the joint 22 the surfaces of the latter being coated with a corrosion-resistant, non-hardening compound. The channel 18 is tapered to form a rim 48 to provide support for the screw-threads 30 in the body H. In a modification, the elbow assembly, Fig. 4, is used to connect pairs of plate units P.
