Class 120(2) A cross-winding machine is characterized by the provision in a unitary structure of a thread guide 22 mounted on a carriage 20 supported on guides 21 so as to be slidable axially in relation to a rotatable cam drum 12 having peripheral cam surfaces defining between them two channels 16, 17 of different widths extending throughout the length of the cam curfaces and located one above the other, one for the accommodation of a guide shuttle 18 and the other for a guide roller 19, the shuttle and the roller constituting together guide means associated with the thread guide carriage 20, rotation of the cam drum 12 mounting in axial traversing movement of the carriage 20 along the guide means 21. The casing 10 of the traverse mechanism contains lubricant in which the drum 12 rotates. In a modification, instead of the cam surfaces being grooves, they are formed as parallel projections extending spirally about the periphery of the cam drum.
