[Classes 120 (ii) and 120 (iii)] In a yarn winding mechanism provided with a rotatable spindle to receive a package core and a yarn guide to be traversed along the core to control the lay of yarn thereon, an idler roller extending the length of the traverse and between which and said package the yarn is laid by the guide, the roller moving away from the core as the package builds up with its axis parallel to the surface of the package, means are provided for shifting the traverse of the guide towards the nose of the package by progressive increments of movement which bear a direct relation to the increased size of the package as it progressively builds up. The thread guide 5 is traversed by the cam 4 through a follower 11 and tube 9, the cam 4 being constructed to give to the guide 5 an acceleration as it approaches the nose of the package and a decelaration as it approaches the base of the package. A roller extending along the length of the package and parallel to the contacting surface thereof, is rocked, with its carrying frame 6, by the growing package, to rotate a bushing 37 about the shaft 3. Attached to the bushing are diametrically opposed studs 43 carrying rollers 44 which engage in cam slots 36 in two plates 35 attached, through ball bearings, with a bushing 27' slidably keyed to the shaft 3. As the package grows, the traverse cam 4 is therefore moved with a motion, determined by the slope of the cam slots 36, towards the nose of the package. The preferred form of cam slots 36 will give an acceleration of movement of the cam 4 towards the nose so to produce a coned package with a convex base and a bevelled concave nose (Fig. 4).
