728,529. Winding yarns &c. BRITISH NYLON SPINNERS, Ltd. Dec. 14, 1953 [Dec. 13, 1952], No. 31657 /52. Class 120(2). The rotary traverse mechanism of a yarn winding machine comprises a rotatable drum 1 with an endless helical yarn-guiding groove 3 the width of which is substantially reduced at the points 13 at which the axial motion of the yarn is reversed. In the embodiment of Fig. 2, the groove 3 is formed with a constant width 5 and then templates 9 of the same depth as the groove are fitted to give the narrow reversal points 13. An auxiliary starting groove 37 entirely separate from the traversing grooves may be included. In a further modification, Fig. 6, the traversing groove 41, 43 is arranged with a change of helix angle between the first and second halves of traverse with slight narrowing at 45. A rotatable disc carrying a thread guide and driven in synchronism with rotatable drum, may be included to ensure that the yarn is positioned readily to engage the traverse groove.
