Abstract

970,942. Boots &c. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO. Ltd. Jan. 30, 1961 [Feb. 1, 1960], No. 3417/61. Heading A3B. A shoe bottom unit comprises a sole and heel portion 11 and 18 with a recess 22 formed in the upper face thereof, said recess being bounded by a marginal rim 14 and a lip which extends inwardly of the rim. The lip and the surface of the rim lie in a plane parallel to the tread surface of the heel portion, and the recess has a transverse curvature corresponding to the curvature of the shoe bottom. The unit is moulded in a mould as shown in Fig. 1 (not shown). The method of attaching the unit to the upper comprises the following steps applying adhesive to the roughened surface of the recess in the unit, heating the unit to increase the plasticity, positioning the shoe bottom of a lasted upper toe first in the recess, stretching the unit lengthwise, placing the unit and lasted upper in a sole attaching press and pressing the unit while still hot against the shoe bottom to conform and attach it thereto.
