797,540. Typewriters. BRITISH TABULATING MACHINE CO., Ltd. July 29, 1955, No. 21973/55. Class 100(4) A type wheel 1 set by gearing 5-7 is mounted in a plate 3 freely pivoted on a shaft 4. A spring 11 attached to a wire 12 freely slidable in a plate 13 urges the plate 3 and wheel 1 towards a platen 14 but ceases to be effective before impact occurs. Thus, when a notch 10 on a cam 9 comes opposite a projection 8, the spring 11 gives plate 3 an impulse but the type wheel strikes under its own momentum as the wire 12 slides through the plate 13. In modifications, a second cam can replace the spring, and, in other cases, the force of impact can be adjusted, either for individual type wheels or for large banks, by adjusting the tension of the spring or the period for which it is effective.
