Abstract

789,752. Retractive switches. SMITH & SONS (ENGLAND), Ltd., S. June 21, 1956 [June 21, 1955], No. 17798/55. Class 38 (5). A microswitch 17 enclosed in a casing 10 is operated by a plunger 14 which passes through and is sealed in a flexible metal element sealed to the casing 10 to render the casing gas tight. As shown a metal bellows 25 is soldered or brazed to the plunger and casing 10, the bellows acting as the restoring spring for the plunger. A screw 15 engages the microswitch blade 18, and stops 16, 23 limit the movement of the plunger. A spring-loaded press button 30 is slidably mounted in the plunger 14 and provides an overtravel safety arrangement. The switch may be filled with an inert atmosphere. In a modification (Fig. 5, not shown) the bellows is replaced by a diaphragm. The switch is suitable for use in machine tools.
