788,831. Stutfing-box substitutes; centrifugal pumps. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER AKT.-GES. Feb. 10, 1956 [Feb. 12, 1955], No. 4270/56. Classes 110 (1) and 122 (5). A rotary pump comprising a motor 4 disposed outside the pump cover and driving a vertical shaft 2 passing through a stuffing-box 5 in the pump cover has a buffer of air or gas 11 maintained within the pump casing between the stuffing-box and the liquid to be conveyed for the purpose of balancing the pressure of the liquid in the pump casing 1. Leakage of gas from the space 11 through the stuffing-box 5, with a corresponding rise in the level of liquid in the casing, is made good by admitting gas through a pipe 9 connected to a pressure source through a valve 10 controlled either directly or remotely by the movement of a float 8 in a chamber connected to the casing. The connection between the float 8 and the valve 10 may be by mechanical linkage or by electrical or magnetic means. When the level of the liquid is restored by the pressure admitted through the pipe 9, the valve 10 closes as the level falls in the float chamber.
