Abstract

518,526. Stuffing box substitutes. ALEXANDER, P., and BARNES, P. C. Aug. 24, 1938, No. 24882. [Class 122 (v)] A rod 2, projecting through the wall 1 of a vacuum chamber, is sealed by liquid in a casing 3 secured to the vacuum chamber by a member 5 extended to dip into the liquid forming an annular V-tube. The outer face' of the liquid is subjected to an auxiliary vacuum through a pipe 10. Thus if the chamber is exhausted by a high-vacuum pump coacting with a preliminary pump, the pipe 10 may be connected with the preliminary pump. A baffle 13 diverts any bubbles of air leaking through the base of the casing. A movable liquid container 14 allows the height of the liquid in the seal to be kept at a convenient level in spite of variations in the vacuum difference. In a modification for a rod projecting through the top of the vacuum chamber, the rod carries a bell dipping into a liquid seal. If the rod is horizontal it may be driven by a vertical shaft, the shafts and gearing being enclosed by a liquid-sealed casing.
