Abstract

788,505. Stopping boiler tubes. SMITH, W. G. Aug. 15, 1956, No. 24902/56. Class 99(1). A device for sealing a defective boiler tube 12 comprises a tubular member 19 which is passed through it and extends beyond its ends, means shown as cones 14, 18, attached to -a rod 13 being forced into the member 19 the edges of which are expanded into sealing engagement with the ends of the defective tube. The rod 13, carrying the conical part 14 which is screwed on and riveted over at 15, is passed through the tube until the part 14 is clear of the rear end. The tubular member 19, made from copper or wrought iron, is then inserted so that its ends project from the front and rear ends of the defective tube and the conical part 18 is slid over the front threaded portion of the rod 13 and is tightened by a nut 17 until the ends of the member 19 are deformed into sealing engagement. Further tightening may be effected while blows are being struck on a wing nut 21.
